Newsletter - April 2016
Dear Spiritual Awakening Student –
There is something about the months of April and May in this part of the country that frees up the natives to break out in freedom and fun. The chill of winter and early spring has passed and the hot summer days haven’t quite shown up yet. And beyond that, we have the whole state pretty much to ourselves. Our winter tourists left right after Easter and we won’t see the visiting families that come for summer vacation until schools let out around the country in early June.
Most of us can’t stop what we’re doing and simply play 24/7, but there are things we all can do every day, no matter what else is on our agenda, to make our life experience happier.
Lightening up can take a little practice though – so here are a dozen simple suggestions to help you get in the best kind of mood – every day.
1 - Do something kind - for yourself for or someone else. It doesn't have to be earth shaking - just helpful, uplifting or fun. When kindness becomes a daily habit - something that you do automatically just because it feels good with no expectation of reward - you're going to enjoy each day more and more.
2 - Make it a "change" day - reach in your pocket and drop some change in an unusual place where it will delight someone to "discover" it. The amount is not so important, but a little copper plus a little silver sweetens the day’s experience for the giver and the receiver.
3 - Tidy something - a drawer in your desk or kitchen, the glove compartment of your car, your purse or gym bag, the parking lot you cross every day, your wallet or kitchen catch-all drawer. When you bring order to one part of your life, you're letting the Universe know that you'd like more order in the rest of your life as well.
4 - Make 10 people smile. It's amazing how hard it is to get some people to smile back at you when you flash your happy smile at them, and how easy it is to get a great response from others. Bet you can't do just 10.
5 - Exchange something new for something old. Keep your life simpler by releasing (use up, throw away, give away, recycle, sell) something you already have for every new thing you bring into your personal space. It is truly en-“lightening” to cut down on the amount of clutter with which you tend to "stuff" your environment.
6 - Plant something - preferably something like a tree that will take a good long time to become a major presence in the world. And then bask in the "all rightness" of being able to start something wonderful today without worrying about whether or not you'll ever see it fully finished.
7 - Take a "God Walk" - You can take a "God Walk" in the woods, in a formal garden, in your own back yard or around a house plant. Simply spend at least 10 minutes in some natural setting, enjoying and appreciating the beauty and variety of God's creations. If you can slip your shoes off and feel the ground beneath you - even better.
8 - Sing, sing, sing, sing - sing in the shower, the car, the garden, the elevator - whether you think you sound good or not. Sing a favorite hymn, a nursery rhyme, a hit song from your teen years, or a current hit - but sing. Joyful noises tend to make the whole planet happier.
9 - Let Go. Let go today of one old habit, one old opinion, one old requirement that you know is holding you back from doing exactly what your heart is calling you to do. It isn't letting go that hurts - it's holding on that hurts.
10 - Come to your "senses". You came to planet earth to enjoy living in your magnificent body because one of the perks of that was being able to see, hear, smell, taste and feel - plus more. Explore them all today - look at something beautiful, listen to something wonderful, taste something delicious, smell something tantalizing, feel something luxurious. Makes good sense, doesn't it?
Did you notice that none of those things require you to buy anything new? Every one of these twelve steps toward a more interesting and enjoyable life are FREE – and available to anyone, anytime, anywhere. That’s what makes them Universally inspired, and guaranteed effective for lifting your mood when you practice them.
Have fun experimenting with these twelve exercises and when you see how much fun they are to do, we invite you to invent at least 12 more. Some good guidelines for creating your own happiness activities are:
Keep them simple
Make sure they are free or very low cost
They should be easy to do
They should feel spontaneously satisfying
They shouldn’t require directions
They must have a built in feel-good element for the giver and the receiver.
And most important – they must have an element of fun in them.
Have a great month, and always remember, God Loves You and So Do We.
